Jim Carrey Touches On The 'Batman Forever' Feud With Tommy Lee Jones In New Book
It's no secret that Tommy Lee Jones was kind of a Tommy Lee Dick to Jim Carrey on the set of Batman Forever. Wait....Tommy Lee Dick stands for a whole different thing. You get the idea.
Carrey himself told The Hollywood Reporter about an encounter they had while filming:
"I went over and I said, 'Hey Tommy, how are you doing?' and the blood just drained from his face," Carrey said. "And he got up shaking — he must have been in mid kill me fantasy or something like that. And he went to hug me and he said, 'I hate you. I really don't like you.' And I said, 'What's the problem?' and pulled up a chair, which probably wasn't smart. And he said, 'I cannot sanction your buffoonery.'"
Batman Forever director Joel Shumacher even echoed Carrey's sentiments telling Vulture:
"Tommy is, and I say this with great respect, a scene stealer. Well, you can’t steal the scene from Jim Carrey. It’s impossible. And, I think it irked Tommy."
This week I purchased Carrey's new book written with Dana Vachon titled Memoirs and Misinformation. On the back of the book is perhaps the best descriptor of what lies therein: "None of this is real and all of it is true."
The book itself is a wild mishmash of shit that definitely didn't happen and shit that you kind of know did happen. One can imagine the upcoming statement is one Carrey meant.
In the particular point of the novel we're referencing here Carrey has been summoned by a paranoid Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind writer Charlie Kaufman who wants him to play founding father of the people's republic of China, Mao Zedong after Taylor Swift gets her toe stuck in a skull while hiking in China, leading to a massive cover up (file under probably not true). To which Carrey pontificates:
"In Charlie's (Kaufman) hands, who knew? It could be a masterpiece, his Oscar vehicle, something to make Tommy Lee Jones- who'd never given him his due and always called him a buffoon on the set of Batman Forever- croak of jealousy, that whiskey-soaked Harvard shit, God bless him."
Long live Jim Carrey. For my money the funniest man that has or will ever existed on the planet. Memoirs and Misinformation is available now and can be purchased from Amazon here. Thanks for reading!
