"No Self Awareness" - Kevin Williamson Hints at the New Tone SCREAM 5 Will Be Taking
This weekend, actors from the Scream franchise got together for a good cause and held a zoom reunion to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Coalition, I Have a Dream Foundation and the East Los Angeles Women's Center. Scream writer and Scream 5 Producer Kevin Williamson was part of the event and had some interesting insight (Via Syfy.com ) into why Billy Loomis was so handsome, I mean......the approach you have to take with a Scream 5 an updated Scream (The first one was my question):
"No deconstruction. No self-awareness. Just do the opposite of what we did. I do worry that the franchise kind of wears itself out with all the meta and the deconstruction and there’s only so many times you can it. So many people have since then done horror films like it, or in the vein of. So you kind of worry that it’s run its course."
Williamson continued, praising the current iteration and 'Ready or Not' directors Radio Silence:
"What I love about the new Scream is that it does take a fresh approach. It’s this beautiful sort of fresh new movie, but it also has this nostalgic factor that runs through it. That to me was a perfect blend of how to do the next Scream. So that was what I was most excited about. I’m blown away by the directors, and I was really nervous because nobody is Wes Craven. I was really hesitant to even jump on board and be a part of it, and boy am I glad I did because I think it’s going to make Wes proud."
I think it's fair to say a lot of us little people just assumed the new Scream would find a way to poke fun and deconstruct today's horror films. It's interesting to find out we are about to shy away from the Randy-isms and metatextual leanings of the original films but still somehow honor Craven heavily. He loved the meta shit!
Don't take this as criticism. I fully trust these directors and this cast to do a great job with Scream 5 given their past work and trust from those involved with the original Scream.
The best case scenario for the entire film is for none of us to be able to expect what's coming. Still have my fingers crossed Stu comes back though.
