THE PUNISHER - Thomas Jane Leaves the Door Open, Even if it Means Directing Jon Bernthal

The forever underrated, handsome, wheelin', dealin' actor known as Thomas Jane played the Punisher in 2004 and really didn't get a fair shake at the character. The movie worked for me because of Jane, a few good action scenes, a decent soundtrack and just a really weird charm. However, it didn't have the cojones to do the Punisher character justice.

Jane explains it himself better in an interview with ComicBook.com

"We couldn't make a dark film when we did Punisher in 2004. We couldn't go as dark because people just hadn't trusted, on the production side, that fans would be into that. But, now we've got shows like The Boys and, of course, The Dark Knight came out after The Punisher, where I think that producers and studios are now aware that there's a real audience for the darkness, the Taxi Driver-esque quality that you could pull out of a Frank Castle, and that hasn't been done. And I would love to do that. But again, we have to take it to a place where, frankly, The Punisher has always wanted to go."

Fuckin eh' Thomas Jane. You tell em! Jane gets it. Which, is why he starred in super duper kickass and faithful Punisher youtube short film Dirty Laundry. When asked about that and whether he'd like to do more Punisher (The movie, not some weird S&M sex position) Jane said:

"That would be a fan thing. If the fans really wanted me back, and we could find a script. See, I think the Punisher, and the reason why I did the short, was that it hasn't fully been cracked in a way that fully honors the character, Frank Castle, in a film. And I love what Bernthal did on Netflix. I think he's such a great Punisher. In fact, I would love to direct a Punisher starring Bernthal, because he's such a great actor."

Personally, I think he'd rather play the character than direct Bernthal and is just being modest. I'd rather see him return in a faithful Punisher adaptation, myself. Bernthal was great but he was also handed the keys to a faithful and far better adaptation than Jane was. I would love to see what Jane can do given the right tools.
